She was one of two Chihuahua pups born on the day the Philippine Senate handed down its decision on Chief Justice Renato Corona's impeachment trial. She had that rare choco color while the other one was all black. We called the choco as Amlac while the black chihuahua was named Little Lady. They were names of two personalities that supposedly played controversial roles during the impeachment proceedings. Both dogs are female.
Months passed by and it was time for Amlac to give birth. She was experiencing labor pains for hours on her due date. This made us apprehensive and we decided to see the vet. But the lady veterinarian had gone home and the animal clinic was already closed for the night. We reached her by cellphone and after telling her about the dog's condition, she was on her way back to the clinic. We wanted the vet there in case a caesarian section was necessary.
Immediately after our phone conversation ended, Amlac gave birth to her first puppy. She could not wait. The pup was choco and looked healthy. Just the same, we took Amlac back to the animal clinic where two vets were attending to her. The 2nd puppy came out also in the normal way. Just as we were thinking that everything would be normal, the vet pointed to the protruding foot of the 3rd puppy. The 3rd one was having a hard time, was in an abnormal position and to pull it would be dangerous. We decided then, as the vet suggested, to do it by Caesarian delivery.
Caesarian Section is a medical procedure where incisions are made at the abdomen and uterus to make delivery easier. This surgical procedure is done when the life of the mother (dam) or puppy is at a high risk when done through the normal way. It is the owner who ultimately decides. Though costly, the risk percentage is lowered.
The 3rd and 4th puppies were both choco and were looking good. All four had no health issues. And with a groggy Amlac, we took home all four after four hours. Recuperation for Amlac was done at home. A metal cage was temporarily utilized. And looking at Little Lady, the other Chihuahua that also gave birth about a month ago, the Chihuahua family is really growing. At the latest count, there are seven females and two males. Definitely, it is something to be happy about. Arf, arf, arf.
