The Rustic Town Of Woodend
In the small town of Woodend, which is about an hour away from Melbourne proper, there is a small, traditional brewhouse that makes a wide range of beers. Aside from the actual brewery, it has a bar where one can drink to his heart's content. It also has a restaurant serving good food. Holgate Brewhouse is along the national road of Woodend.
The town of Woodend lies at the foot of Mount Macedon. In the days of the Gold Rush, Woodend was a pass-through town for diggers and travelers bound for the goldfields region. Most of these travelers stayed for a while at the small hotels and made purchases at the stores that lined the main street. Prosperity was evident in the town of Woodend starting in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
Today, Woodend is a top tourist attraction in the state of Victoria. Its proximity to Melbourne makes it an ideal tourist destination. Along its wide principal street, which is High Street, there are antique shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, fruit stores and supermarkets. An old clock tower stands at the main thoroughfare, near the old post office and across an old bank building.
Now, if you intend to try the chilled beers at Holgate, you are allowed to do so. Try the Pilsner, or the Mount Macedon, or Temptress. But make sure that you have a non-drinking companion who will take over the wheel on your way back to Melbourne or to your point of origin. There are police cars patrolling the stretch of Calder highway and other major thoroughfares. Drunk driving is not allowed in Australia.
