Daylesford: At The Foot Of The Mountain Range

Daylesford: At The Foot Of The Mountain Range

The Great Dividing Range is a vast mountain range in Australia that is considered as the third largest mountain range in the world. At the foot of this range is a quiet Victorian town with a population of a little over 2 thousand. Passing through well paved highways with rural scenic views, one reaches Daylesford in about one hour and 20 minutes from the City of Melbourne. Distance is more or less 120 kilometers.

In the 1800s, Daylesford was a mining town where tons of gold were extracted. This contributed to the growth of the economy and the town prospered. There were many mining quarries in the town. When these mining quarries dried up after years of digging, gold diggers moved elsewhere. There was one quarry in Daylesford which was dug deep and, after many years of inactivity, it became a lake. With tall trees around it, Lake Daylesford became a top tourist attraction. It is still a tourist destination to this day.

Near the town center, at a hilly portion, is an old convent surrounded by gum trees, fragrant flowers and ornamental plants. There is a coffee shop where one can sip brewed coffee while appreciating the beautiful and serene surroundings. Next to it is a gift shop. There is also an art gallery. At the second floor is a chapel where one can pause, ponder and say a little prayer.
