The Spirit Of Tasmania At Port Melbourne

        From a far distance, the ship Spirit of Tasmania is easily noticeable. The huge sea vessel, painted in red and white, is docked at the Station Pier in Port Melbourne. It transports passengers from the City of Melbourne to Tasmania and back. Travel time is about 10 hours. Tasmania is an island state of Australia and about 429 kilometers away.


The Spirit of Tasmania travels daily from Port Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania.

There are twin vessels plying the Port Melbourne-Devonport route:
Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II. One can travel at day or at night.

The Spirit of Tasmania can accommodate 1,400 passengers. Ocean recliners, twin cabins or deluxe cabins are available.

One may take his car on board the Spirit of Tasmania.

         In the old days, Station Pier was the sole entry point to Melbourne. All migrants and visitors had to pass through Station Pier. Soldiers sent to fight in the Great Wars departed and returned via Station Pier. Today, Station Pier in Port Melbourne is still the major ship terminal of the City of Melbourne. International as well as interstate cruise ships use it as berthing point.

         Port Melbourne is about 5 kilometers away from the city's Central Business District(CBD). Adjacent to Station Pier is a beach with fine golden sands. It is one of the most popular beaches of Melbourne as it is accessible by tram and other public transport services. There is another pier at Port Melbourne Beach where fishing is a preferred activity. Though near a ship terminal, Port Melbourne Beach is clean with no oil slick and dirt.
