Ned Kelly's Boyhood Home
The other day, on board a Dodge Journey, we took the Hume Freeway en route to Beveridge, some 58 kilometers from Melbourne. Beveridge is the birthplace of famous Australian bushranger/ outlaw Ned Kelly.
On Kelly St. stands an old, dilapidated cottage which was Ned Kelly's boyhood home. It was built by Ned's father, Red Kelly, in 1859. About a kilometer away, perched on a little hill, is a historic tavern built in 1845. It was Red Kelly's favorite hangout as he was a heavy drinker. The Hunter''s Tryst also houses the Post Office and the town's General Store.
It is interesting to note that during Ned Kelly's skirmishes with the police, his trial and sentencing, and eventual execution by hanging, there were countless Ned sympathizers, short of a cult being formed. That was a manifestation of the Australian trait of siding with the underdog. Para din mga Pinoy. Shades of Nardong Putik, shades of Tiagong Akyat.
