Chiang Kai Shek at Padre Algue

Chiang Kai Shek at Padre Algue

Henry Sy, Sr. is a Chinese-Filipino businessman who established the SM Group of Companies.  He is considered the richest man in the Philippines. Lucio Tan, another Chinese-Filipino tycoon, owns Fortune Tobacco Corporation, Philippine Air Lines, Allied Bank and other business establishments.  He is the second richest man in the country. Tony Tan Caktiong is another Chinese Filipino entrepreneur who founded Jollibee Foods Corporation which boasts of 1,480 outlets around the world. Now, what do they have in common?  While all three are highly successful businessmen, they all attended the same school.  All three are alumni of Chiang Kai Shek College, having finished their secondary education at the said school. Sy, Tan and Tan Caktiong are only three of the many distinguished alumni of Chiang Kai Shek College.

Chiang Kai Shek College was established in 1939 by Wong Chun Seng and Yu Ke Thai who had the support of the prominent Chinese residents of Manila.  The school was named after Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek of the Republic of China. Located at Padre Algue Street in Tondo, Manila, Chiang Kai Shek had only 273 students during its initial year.  The school's population has ballooned to more than 7,000 students, as of the latest count.

Chiang Kai Shek College is recognized by the Philippine Government and by the Republic of China. Included in its curriculum are Chinese subjects such as Chinese Literature, Chinese Mathematics and Chinese Culture. The school is situated at the very heart of Tondo. It is near the Divisoria Market, the business establishments along Recto Avenue and Jose Abad Santos Avenue and Manila Chinatown.  Another school near it is the St.Stephen High School at the corner of Masangkay St. and Padre Algue. Several blocks away is Uno High School.

While Chiang Kai Shek has almost complete facilities that help its students acquire a well-rounded education, notable is the school gymnasium. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, when there was a dearth in good playing courts, Chiang Kai Shek's gymnasium was one of the best. Prestigious tournaments were held there. This brings to mind another outstanding high school alumnus, Lim Eng Beng. Perhaps the best cager produced by Chang Kai Shek, Lim Eng Beng transferred to DLSU in college and  led the La Salle Green Archers to the NCAA championship in 1971 and 1974. Turning pro, Lim was one of the key players of the Utex Wranglers when the team won two PBA titles in 1978 and 1980. He is one of PBA's 25 greatest players.  And Lim Eng Beng acknowledges to this day that his basketball skills were honed at Chiang Kai Shek, the old school at Padre Algue.
